Hi! I’m Thomas Mulrooney, or Tom for short. You’ve found my little blog, so you’ll likely want to know a bit about the guy behind it.
I’m a 30-something-year-old man living in the good old North West of England. I’m married to the wonderful Alexandra and we have a little boy called Noah. If you’d like to check out my wife’s blog, you can find it at Just Another Manic Mumday.
I’ve been blogging on and off since the early 2000’s and the days of Open Diary, Livejournal and Blogspot. But I did what many people subsequently did when the social media behemoths took over the Internet and started writing Facebook posts or tweeting. Like millions of other blogs, my blog fell by the wayside and I eventually decided to scrap the whole thing.
So, why I am blogging again? For one, it’s a way to get back into writing. While I continue to do a healthy amount of writing as part of my day job (in digital marketing), there’s a big difference between writing stuff that you are required to write for your job and writing stuff that you personally want to write. So, I want this blog to be an outlet for my thoughts, interests, and simply as a way to keep the writing bug alive. My big ambition is to start writing fiction again, so maybe I’ll stick some of that on here too.
Secondly, I’m a bit fed up of social media and the popularity contest its become. It’s all about who can get the most likes and followers, while influencers shilling products they don’t really believe in dominate the likes of Instagram. I’m not saying blogs can’t be like that too, but at least I have to actively go searching for content rather than having an algorithm decide what’s best for me.
I’m not leaving social media anytime soon, but I do want to use it less. I’d rather spend my time writing and reading long, thoughtful posts and checking out the Internet beyond the social media sites. The Internet used to be a wonderful place to explore, and I think it still is when you move away from the social media sites. So, I want to get that aspect of it back into my life again.
I can’t say this blog will have a ‘niche’ because it likely won’t. It’s just me and my thoughts. It’s whatever I care to write about for whoever cares to read it (if anyone!).
